Let DOP\((S^ 1)\) be the Lie algebra of differential operators over \(C^ \infty(S^ 1)\) on the circle \(S^ 1\), \({\mathcal L}_ n\) the affine space of differential operators of order \(n\) on \(S^ 1\) (also over \(C^ \infty(S^ 1)\), but now with leading coefficient equal to one), and \(\text{Vect}({\mathcal L}_ n)\) the Lie algebra of vector fields on \({\mathcal L}_ n\). \textit{A. O. Radul} [cf. Funct. Anal. Appl. 25, No. 1, 25-39 (1991)] defined a Lie algebra homomorphism from DOP\((S^ 1)\) to \(\text{Vect}({\mathcal L}_ n)\) and obtained Poisson-Lie actions of DOP\((S^ 1)\) on \({\mathcal L}_ n\) and on the \(W\)-algebra \(W_ n\). As a consequence, relationships between the Lie algebra of differential operators on the circle and Gel'fand-Dikij algebras were established. Now let \(W^{(q)}_{\text{KP}}\) be the one-parameter \(W\)-algebra of generalized pseudodifferential operators introduced by the authors and \textit{J. Mas} [cf. e.g. Phys. Lett. B 299, No. 1/2, 41-48 (1993)] and the references given therein. In the present paper the Radul map on DOP\((S^ 1)\) is extended to an algebra of vector fields on a space of generalized pseudodifferential operators, which contains \(W^{(q)}_{\text{KP}}\) as a subalgebra. The construction yields new Radul-type relationships and a proof of the fact [cf. \textit{S. Aoyama} and \textit{Y. Kodama}, Phys. Lett. B 278, No. 1/2, 56-62 (1992)] that \(W_ \infty\) is the algebra of additional symmetries of the KP hierarchy. The extension of these results to the supersymmetric case will appear elsewhere. The review paper [1] in the bibliography has in the meantime appeared in Phys. Rep. 223, No. 4, 183-276 (1993). (It contains 343 references).
