The author studies the Calabi variational problem: minimize the functional \(\int_M s^2_gdv_g\) among all metrics \(g\) in a given Kähler class. In this context he proves the following main Theorem: If \(M\) is a closed Riemann surface with \(\chi (M) \leq 0\), then the extremal metric exists.
