In this paper a stationary and isotropic Poisson process \(X\) is assumed in the space of hyperplanes of \(\mathbb{R}^d\), and the induced random tessellation of \(\mathbb{R}^d\) is considered. The study of the zero cell and of the typical cell of such a stationary Poisson hyperplane tessellation is a very rich area of research, where the authors themselves have previously obtained important achievements. In this paper their investigation concerns the asymptotic shapes of large typical cells, where ``large'' means large \(k\)-th intrinsic volume, \(k\in\{2,\dots,d\}\), or large diameter. It is proved that the asymptotic shapes are balls in the first case, and segments in the second one. The main step is to give a suitable explicit representation for the distribution of the typical cell. This is established by using the ``lowest vertex'' as a center function. Then the proof heavily depends on some results previously obtained by the authors [Geom. Funct. Anal. 17, 156--191 (2007; Zbl 1114.60012)], which are employed and adapted to show that a very small probability characterizes large deviations of the shapes of large cells from the limit shapes.
