Let \(C_p\) and \(R_p\) be the \(p\)-column and \(p\)-row Hilbertian operator spaces. Generalizing to the context of noncommutative \(L_p\)-spaces earlier results of \textit{M.\,Junge} [Invent.\ Math.\ 161, No.\,2, 225--286 (2005; Zbl 1092.47060)] and \textit{G.\,Pisier} [Int.\ Math.\ Res.\ Not.\ 2004, No.\,74, 3983--4018 (2004; Zbl 1079.46041)] on completely isomorphic embeddings of the operator Hilbert space \(OH\) into the predual of a von Neumann algebra, the author shows two important facts. First, that for \(1\leq p < q\leq2\), one can represent \(C_q\) and \(R_q\) as quotients of subspaces of \(C_p\oplus R_p\). Two proofs of the fact are presented, one using complex and one real interpolation. Second, that for \(1\leq p<2\), a quotient of a subspace of \(C_p\oplus R_p\) embeds completely isomorphically into \(L_p(M)\) for some von Neumann algebra \(M\). The proof uses a noncommutative Khinchine-type inequality. Together, the results imply the possibility of embedding \(C_q\) (or \(R_q\)) completely isomorphically into \(L_p(M)\) for a von Neumann algebra \(M\). It turns out that the algebra in question can be chosen a type III\({}_\lambda\) factor for any \(\lambda\in (0,1]\), but it cannot be semifinite. This is specific to the operator space level -- as proved by Junge, one can embed the \(q\)-Schatten classes isomorphically (as Banach spaces) into \(L_p\) over the hyperfinite type II\({}_1\)-factor.
