Motivated by studies due to \textit{O. Bor\D{u}vka} [Linear differential transformations of the second order. (1971)] and \textit{F. Neuman} [Global properties of linear ordinary differential equations. (1991; Zbl 0784.34009)] in the context of modeling by means of linear differential equations, the author considers a functional equation approach. Some applications are given for using phase function ideas to solve some linear difference equations with constant coefficients.
