The paper investigates the emergence of oscillations in population dynamics by the method of time-delayed differential equations. It proposes and exploits a logistic population model of a single species with a maturation delay stage. The adult population is related to its previous life stage with a maturation delay \(r\) and has a nonlinear exponential birth rate, \(b \exp(- p r)\), with a birth decay coefficient \(p\). Hopf bifurcations and stability of periodic solutions are analyzed using the center manifold theory and normal form technique. The model also includes an external periodic excitation, which mimics the influence of external factors subject to seasonal changes. By means of the integral averaging theory, phase-locked and phase-shifting solutions induced by the external excitation are also investigated and verified by numerical simulations.
