After reviewing well-known facts about the singular value decomposition (SVD) of a matrix, the authors describe (without giving details except some operation counts) how they use the SVD to solve discretized bifurcation problems for partial differential equations as they arise in fluid dynamics. No remarks are made concerning the relation between the solutions of the discretized and the continuous problems.
