Given a real or complex matrix A the sign matrix of A is used to locate the eigenvalues of A in the complex plane. By modifying an approach of \textit{J. Howland} [ibid. 49, 221-232 (1983; Zbl 0507.15007)] real instead of complex arithmetic may be used when A is real. In addition it is shown that the original problem may be decomposed into smaller subproblems in order to save computational work.
