The authors study the distances from each sample point to its nearest neighbour, for a sample of independent and uniformly distributed random vectors in the unit cube in the d-dimensional space for any of the usual metrics. They show that the largest one has, apart for a linear transformation in general and a special transformation in a special case, the asymptotic Gumbel distribution.
