The paper deals with conditions on a Hermitian band matrix A which imply the existence of an invertible Hermitian completion of A generated by filling in A. It turns out that so-called almost maximum Hermitian submatrices with certain properties play a key-role in this investigation. Further, special kinds of completions such as single-step completions are considered.
