The authors consider composition operators with symbol \(\varphi\) acting on \(\mathcal H_\alpha\), consisting of holomorphic functions in the unit disc such that \(\int_{\mathbb D} |f'(z)|^2 (1-|z|^2)^\alpha dA(z)<\infty\) for \(\alpha\geq 0\) (this family covers weighted Bergman spaces \(A^2_\beta\) and weighted Dirichlet spaces \(D_\alpha\)). The aim of the paper is to describe the properties of the symbol in terms of the geometry of \(\varphi (\mathbb D)\) for the operator \(C_\varphi\) to belong to the Schatten class \(S_p(\mathcal H_\alpha)\). They assume that \(\Omega=\varphi(\mathbb D)\), for some univalent \(\varphi:\mathbb D\to \mathbb D\), is a subdomain of \(\mathbb D\) such that \(\partial \Omega\cap \partial \mathbb D=\{1\}\) and \(\partial \Omega\) has in a neighborhood of \(1\) a polar equation \(1-r=\gamma(|\theta|)\), where \(\gamma:[0,\delta]\to [0,1]\) is continuous, increasing and with \(\gamma(0)=0\). Compactness of \(C_\varphi\) is known to be characterized by \(\int_0^\delta \frac{\gamma(t)}{t^2}dt<\infty.\) The main theorem of the paper establishes, for \(\alpha>0\) and \(p>0\) and under mild assumptions on \(\gamma\), that \(C_\varphi\in S_p(\mathcal H_\alpha)\) if and only if \[ \int_0^\delta \frac{e^{-p\alpha\Gamma(t)/2}}{\gamma(t)}dt<\infty, \] where \[ \Gamma(t)=\frac{2}{\pi}\int_t^\delta \frac{\gamma(s)}{s^2}ds. \] As a corollary, the authors manage to construct operators in prescribed Schatten classes.
