Let \(\pi\) be a smooth irreducible square-integrable representation of \(\mathrm{GL}(m,F)\) where \(F\) is a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic zero. The author studies the exterior square \(L\)-function \(L_{\text{JS}}(s,\pi ,\wedge^2)\) defined by \textit{H. Jacquet} and \textit{J. Shalika} [in: Automorphic forms, Shimura varieties, and L-functions. Vol. II, Proc. Conf., Ann Arbor/MI (USA) 1988, Perspect. Math. 11, 143--226 (1990; Zbl 0695.10025)]. It is proved that \(L_{\text{JS}}(s,\pi ,\wedge^2)\) is regular and non-vanishing for \(\text{Re}\;s>0\) (if \(m\) is odd, also for \(\text{Re}\;s=0\)). Necessary conditions for this function to have a pole at \(s=0\) are found.
