A compact polyhedron \(X\) is said to have the bounded index property if there is an integer \(B\) such that for any map \(f:X\to X\) and any fixed point class \(\mathbf F\) we have that \(|\text{ind}(f,\mathbf F )|\leq B\). Similarly \(X\) is said to have the bounded index property for homeomorphisms if the above condition holds for all homeomorphisms \(f\). \textit{B. Jiang} [Math. Ann. 311, No. 3, 467--479 (1998; Zbl 0903.55003)] posed the question of whether compact aspherical polyhedra must possess the bounded index property for homeomorphisms. The present author answers this question in the affirmative for homeomorphisms of compact (connected) hyperbolic 3-manifolds. More precisely, he proves that in this case we have that \(\text{ind}(f,\mathbf F)\leq\)1 for every fixed point class of \(f\) and that \(\sum\text{ind}(f,\mathbf F)>1-2\text{rank}\pi_1(X)\) where the sum is taken over all fixed point classes \(\mathbf F\) with \(\text{ind}(f,\mathbf F)<0\).
