This paper is concerned with the classification of irreducible smooth representations of a reductive group \(G\) defined over a non-archimedean local field. J. N. Bernstein decomposed the category of smooth representations of \(G\) into a direct product of full subcategories indexed by inertial classes, that is equivalence classes of supercuspidal irreducible representations of a Levi subgroup \(L\) modulo conjugacy and torsion by unramified characters. Then C. Bushnell et P. Kutzko suggested to describe each subcategory via certain representations of compact open subgroups of \(G\) called types: if \((J,\lambda)\) is a type for an inertial class \(\mathfrak s\), the subcategory associated to \(\mathfrak s\) is canonically equivalent to the category of modules over the Hecke algebra \({\mathcal H}(G,\lambda)\) of compactly supported \(\lambda\)-spherical functions on \(G\). They carry out this programme for the general linear group [\textit{C. J. Bushnell} and \textit{P. C. Kutzko}, The admissible dual of \(\mathrm{GL}(N)\) via compact open subgroup. Princeton, NJ : Princeton University Press (1993; Zbl 0787.22016); Compos. Math. 119, No. 1, 53--97 (1999; Zbl 0933.22027)]. In this paper, the authors carry out the same programme for a classical group with compact centre over a non-archimedean local field with odd residual characteristic. They conclude by showing that the Hecke algebra of a type for an inertial class of a maximal Levi subgroup is abelian or a generic Hecke algebra on an infinite dihedral group whose parameters are (theoretically) computable via Lusztig's results. The methods are those of \textit{S. Stevens} [Invent. Math. 172, No. 2, 289--352 (2008; Zbl 1140.22016)] adapted to a wider class of semi-simple characters, the self-dual semi-simple characters. The construction of a type for the inertial class of a cuspidal representation of \(G\) appears in the paper cited above and the authors give a corrected version of it (\S 4 and appendix). The construction of a type for the inertial class of a cuspidal representation \(\sigma\) of a proper Levi subgroup \(M\) uses the theory of covers developped by \textit{C. J. Bushnell} and \textit{P. C. Kutzko} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 77, No. 3, 582--634 (1998; Zbl 0911.22014)]. Starting from a result of J.-F. Dat which connects semi-simple characters of \(M\) and \(G\), the authors construct a decomposed pair as above \((J_{M}^o, \lambda_{M}^o)\) where \(J_{M}^o\) is an open compact subgroup of \(M\) and \(\lambda_{M}^o\) an irreducible representation of \(J_{M}^o\) contained in \(\sigma\). The essential point is to prove that this decomposed pair is a cover of \((J_{M}^o, \lambda_{M}^o)\). The proof combines transitivity properties of covers and results obtained by S. Stevens in his previous paper to come down to a trivial case. Then, from \((J_{M}^o, \lambda_{M}^o)\) and its cover, they build a type for the cuspidal representation \(\sigma\) of \(M\) and a cover of it.
