The purpose of this paper is to extend and clarify the methods of two of the author's papers [Duke Math. J. 108, No.\,2, 363--393 (2001; Zbl 1015.42008), Am. J. Math. 123, 1009--1053 (2001; Zbl 0995.44001)], using the methods of his paper in Geom. Funct. Anal. 17, No. 4, 1106--1138 (2007; Zbl 1141.42009), and developing ideas in Carnot-Carathéodory geometry including some based on the fundamental paper \textit{A. Nagal, E. Stein} and \textit{S. Wainger} [Acta Math. 155, 103-147 (1985; Zbl 0578.32044)]. The author thereby proves an analogue for singular Radon transforms to the T(1) theorem of \textit{G. David, J.-L. Journé} [Ann. Math. (2) 120, 371--397 (1984; Zbl 0567.47025)]. As in [M. Greenblatt (loc. cit.)], a singular integral operator is associated to a singular Radon transform. The crux of this paper consists of showing that the difference of the singular integral operator and the singular Radon transform is bounded on L2, analogous to [M. Greenblatt (loc. cit.)] and their predecessors. Consequently, in some sense this T(1) theorem for singular Radon transforms follows from `lifting' to the traditional T(1) theorem for the associated singular integral operator.
