The main result of this paper is that there is no expansive commutative group action on any Peano continuum having a free dendrite, which is a generalization of Kato's result saying that no 1-dimensional compact ANR admits an expansive homeomorphism [cf. \textit{H. Kato}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 108, No.~1, 267--269 (1990; Zbl 0678.58028)].
