The authors show how the ``Fourier duality'' property of Paley Wiener spaces can be generalized to shift invariant spaces and deduce regular and irregular sampling formulas in such spaces. More precisely, let \(V_\varphi\) be a shift-invariant space with stable generator \(\varphi\). Let \(T: L_2(0,1)\to L_2(\mathbb R)\) with \(F\mapsto f\), \(f(t) = \langle F, K_t\rangle\) and \(K_t(\xi) =\sum_{n\in\mathbb Z}\overline\varphi(t + n)e^{2\pi in\xi}\). Then they prove that \(T\) is a an invertible bounded operator of \(L^2(0,1)\) onto \(V_\varphi\). In particular, the orthonormal basis \(\{e^{2\pi inx}\}_{n\in\mathbb Z}\) is mapped to the Riesz basis \(\{\varphi(t-n)\}_{n\in\mathbb Z}\) of \(V_\varphi\). The authors examine conditions on \(F\) such that \(\{e^{2\pi inx}F(x)\}_{n\in\mathbb Z}\) is a Bessel sequence, a Riesz basis or a frame of \(L^2(0,1)\). Concerning regular sampling on \(\{a + n\}\), \(a\in [0,1)\) they prove the following theorem: If \(1/K_a\in L_2(0,1)\), then the following conditions are equivalent: i) \(0 < \text{ess\,inf}\,|K_a|\leq \text{ess\,sup}|K_a| < \infty.\) ii) The integer translates of \(S_a := T(1/K_a)\) form a Riesz basis of \(V_\varphi\) and \[ f(t)=\sum_{n\in\mathbb Z}f(a+n)S_a(t -n),\quad t\in \mathbb R. \] The series converges in the \(L^2(\mathbb R)\) sense, absolutely and uniformly on subsets of \(\mathbb R\) where \(\| K_t\|_{L_2(0,1)}\) is bounded. Under additional special conditions on the matrix \(D_\Delta :=(d_{n,k})\), \(\overline d_{n,k}:= \varphi(a+n-k+\delta_n)-\varphi(a + n- k)\) which are modified in a couple of corollaries, they prove that \(f \in V_\varphi\) can be also expanded with respect to irregular samples \(\{a + n + \delta_n\}\), \(a\in [0,1)\), \(\delta_n\in (-1,1)\) as \[ f(t)=\sum_{n\in\mathbb Z} f(a+n+\partial_n)S_n(t),\quad t\in\mathbb R \] with a Riesz basis \(S_n\) of \(V_\varphi\).
