After reviewing the general theory of fusion systems as developed mainly by L.~Puig, the author introduces the notions of normal and simple fusion systems, in analogy to the corresponding notions for finite groups. These concepts are illustrated in the case of dihedral \(2\)-local groups, of the orthogonal groups \(\Omega_7(q)\) for \(q\equiv\pm 3\pmod 8\) and \(p=2\), and it is shown that the fusion system on the Sylow \(2\)-subgroup of a \(7\)-dimensional spinor group over a field of characteristic \(3\) considered by \textit{R.~Solomon} [J.~Algebra 28, 182-198 (1974; Zbl 0293.20022)] is simple.
