This review of 130 pages gives a thorough overview about the quasinormal modes for black holes in an arbitrary number of spacetime dimension \(d > 3\). In chapters 1 to 4, the classical Einstein theory is considered, in the 8 pages of chapter 5, applications to quantum gravity are given, and chapter 6 lists some conclusions. The reference list of 110 items is a useful source for finding the details of similar calculations. The main example of the calculation is the wave equation for a massless uncharged real test-scalar field in the background of a static black hole spacetime. Vector and tensor perturbations are discussed, also. The solutions are developed into spherical harmonics, and the radial functions typically give Bessel functions. In the asymptotically flat region of spacetimes, the harmonics can be interpreted as particles with well-defined frequencies -- these being the main topic of the whole paper.
