The author discusses the arclength continuation method for computing the numerical solution of a system of differential algebraic equations (DAEs) of index 1, in the presence of singular points (cusp points or points of tangency). By introducing an artificial parameter (the arclength), the system of DAEs becomes a new system called the ``augmented system''. This system is discretized using a first order backward difference formula . The iteration matrix of the system is proved to be nonsingular, in case of cusp point and also in case of point of tangency. Four examples are presented.
