Interval exchange transformations with a fixed permutation on \(d\) letters are parameterized by the standard simplex in \(\mathbb R^d\), giving a notion of a residual collection of interval exchanges. The main result here is that a residual set of interval exchanges on \(d\) intervals, for \(d\geq 4\), and under a natural but technical combinatorial non-degeneracy condition, are topologically mixing. This shows, in particular, that there is a uniquely ergodic topologically mixing interval exchange, and gives further results on topological mixing for certain billiard flows in an L-shaped billiard table.
