The interesting paper under review deals with the questions of existence and uniqueness of non-negative solutions to the Cauchy problem \[ \begin{cases} \rho(x)\partial_tu=\Delta u^m & \text{in}\;\mathbb R^n\times \mathbb R_+,\quad n\geq 3,\\ u(x,0)=u_0, \end{cases} \] within the class of solutions with finite energy \[ E(t)=\int_{\mathbb R^n} \rho(x)u(x,t)\,dx\quad \forall t\geq0. \] Assuming \(m>1\) (slow diffusion) and the density \(\rho(x)\) positive, bounded and smooth, the authors prove existence of weak solutions starting from data \(u_0\geq0\) with a finite energy. It is shown that uniqueness holds true if \(\rho(x)\) has a moderate decay as \(| x| \to\infty\) which essentially amounts to the condition \(\rho\notin L^1({\mathbb R^n}).\) Moreover, conditions on the density are identified which guarantee finite speed of propagation and energy conservation, that is, \(E(t)=\text{const}.\) The approach is based on a new a~priori estimate for the solutions.
