The author is looking to derive a formula for the sum of the series \[ \sum_n(m+n+1)^p{{n+m}\choose{n}} x^n,\quad | x| <1 \] in the form \(P(x)/(1-x)^{m+p+1}\) where \(P(x)\) is a polynomial of degree \(p-1\). Two lemmas are proved containing combinatorial identities which lead to a recursive formula for \(S(p)\) and hence a way to calculate it for any \(p\). An application is also discussed and the author points out the connection between the general formula for the series and the moments of a negative binomial distribution.
