The paper considers oscillation criteria for the solutions of the difference equation \[ x_{n+1} - x_n + p_nx_{n-k} = 0\;,\;n=0,1,2,\ldots \] with \(k>0\) and \(p_n\geq 0\). The paper first gives some account of known oscillation criteria and states that one of them is false since it relies on a wrong version of Koplatadze-Chanturia lemma. Further it is given and proved a new criterion : if \[ 0<\alpha\leq (k/(k+1))^{k+1} \] and one of the following conditions holds \[ \limsup_{n\rightarrow\infty} \sum_{n-k}^{n-1}p_i>1-\alpha^2/4 \] or \[ \limsup_{n\rightarrow\infty} \sum_{n-k}^{n-1}p_i>1-\alpha^k \] then all the solutions of the above equation oscillate. A comparison of the prescriptions of this criterion with those of the other ones presented in the paper is given.
