[Part I by the same authors in Ann. Math. (2) 159, 641--724 (2004; Zbl 1053.22009).] Let \(G/K\) be a Riemannian symmetric space of noncompact type. \textit{D. N. Akhiezer} and \textit{S. G. Gindikin} [Math. Ann. 286, 1--12 (1990; Zbl 0681.32022)] found an open subset \(\Xi \subset G_{\mathbb C}/K_{\mathbb C}\) which inherits a complex structure from \(G_{\mathbb C}/K_{\mathbb C}\) and it contains \(G/K\) as a totally real submanifold. The Akhiezer-Gindikin domain can easily be shown to be a Grauert domain for the Riemannian symmetric space \(G/K\). One of the first results of the paper under review is that \(\Xi\) is a \(G\)-invariant domain of holomorphy. Hence any symmetric space of noncompact type \(X=G/K\) prolongs to a canonical complex manifold \(\Xi\) contained in the tangent bundle \(TX\). One of the goals of this paper is to formulate some fundamental harmonic analysis on \(G/K\) in terms of complex analysis on \(\Xi\). The other main goal of the paper is to give a detailed description of the complex differential geometry on \(\Xi\). Besides the Kaehler structure on the cotangent bundle, there are two more Kaehler structures whose metric holomorphically extends that of \(G/K\). These other Kaehler metrics need not be definite on all of \(\Xi\). The authors show that \(\Xi\) has an ample supply of plurisubharmonic exhaustion functions. They extend results about holomorphic extensions of a previous work to exceptional groups. They also define a \(G\)-equivariant heat kernel transform on \(G/K\).
