Through the recent works of \textit{F. Guerra} [About the cavity fields in mean field spin glass models, preprint, cond-mat/0307673] and \textit{M. Aizenman, R. Sims} and \textit{S. L. Starr} [Phys. Rev., B (3) 68, No. 21, 214403 (4 pp.) (2003)], a general method of proving bounds on the free energy of mean field spin glasses has been developed. It requires a careful coupling of the Gibbs state of the model in finite volume to an auxilliary random structure, dubbed ``random overlap structure'' by Aizenman et al. In the present article this method is extended to the Viana-Bray model, a dilute version of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. This situation requires to introduce a considerable more complex class of random overlap structures, called her random multi-overlap structures. On this basis the author proves both an extended variational principle for the free energy, and an upper bound for the free energy.
