The first results characterizing the existence of a non-zero function supported on certain subsets of the real line in termes of the decay of its Fourier transform were published by \textit{R. E. A. C. Paley} and \textit{N. Wiener} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 35, 348--355 (1933; Zbl 0006.25704)] and \textit{A. E. Ingham} [J. Lond. Math. Soc. 9, 29--32 (1934; JFM 60.0347.02)]. In the paper under review, the authors extend the result of Paley and Wiener to connected, noncompact real semisimple Lie groups with finite centre and arbitrary rank. They also prove an analogue of the result of Ingham for bi-K-invariant functions on connected, noncompact complex semisimple Lie groups. The established rezults are used then to prove a unique continuation property of solutions to the initial value problem for time-dependent Schrödinger equations in the context of Riemannian symmetric spaces. The authors suggest also the problem of extending the obtained rezults to general Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type.
