For a genus \(g\) surface with \(n\) boundary components, we consider the Torelli group which is the kernel of a representation from the mapping class group of the surface to \(\text{Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Z})\). An embedding \(i\) from a surface to another one induces a map \(i_*\) on the mapping class groups of these surfaces, but Torelli groups are not functorial or closed under restriction with respect to \(i_*\). The author defines a description which shows how the subsurfaces are embedded. Then Torelli groups corresponding to this description satisfy such properties. He also determines generators for the Torelli group of this description.
