The group \(SL(2,\mathbb{C})\) has an open full measure subset \(G_ 1 G_ 2\) where \(G_ 1\) consists of all upper triangular matrices with unitary elements on the diagonal and \(G_ 2\) of all lower triangular matrices with positive elements on the diagonal. This modified Gauss decomposition is the basis of the paper. These two subgroups have natural quantizations. The first one gives the quantized \(E(2)\) group of motions of the plane. The second one is the Pontryagin dual of the first one. Taking the quantum double, a quantization of \(\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})\) is obtained. The commutation relations of the generators are quite complicated, but it is explained in the paper that nevertheless, they appear to be rather natural. The paper also deals with this quantum group on the \(C^*\)- algebra level. This problem was solved for the quantum \(E(2)\) and its dual by S. L. Woronowicz and it turned out to be highly non-trivial. Due to the fact that this quantization of \(\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})\) admits this type of Gauss decomposition, it turned out to be possible to construct also here the \(C^*\)-version of this quantum group. In a way, this is a remarkable fact, given the difficulties to obtain the \(C^*\)-version of the much simpler algebraic quantization of the \(E(2)\) group and its dual, and the complexity of the algebraic quantization of \(\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})\).
