The authors consider, in one space dimension, the Perona-Malik equation which represents a nonlinear parabolic model in image reconstruction. Taken along with periodic boundary conditions, its solution depends on the initial condition only. The authors prove results about the possible limit solutions (taken along subsequences of semi and fully discretized solutions) -- which may be completely different from each other and from the true solution. This latter may exhibit jump points which can disappear and reappear in time what is connected with the pathological mixed forward-backward behaviour of the equation making its numerical solution and the investigation a difficult problem.
