The authors prove several theorems on semicontinuity. The model example is the following Theorem: Let \(A\in L^\infty (\Omega )^{d \times d}\), \(B:\Omega \to \mathbb{R}^{d\times d}\), \(B(x)\zeta \cdot \zeta \geq \alpha | \zeta | ^2\), \(B(x)^{-1}\zeta \cdot \zeta \geq \beta^{-1} | \zeta | ^2\). Let \(u_n\) and \(v_n\) be two sequences in \(H_0^1( \Omega )\) such that \(u_n\rightharpoonup u\) and \(v_n \rightharpoonup v\) weakly in \(H_0^1(\Omega )\), \(-\text{div} (A\nabla u_n)\geq 0\) and \(-\text{div}(B\nabla v_n)\geq 0\) in \({\mathcal D}'(\Omega )\). Then \[ \liminf \int \psi A\nabla u_n\cdot \nabla v_n\geq \int \psi A\nabla u \cdot \nabla v \] for all \(\psi \in C^\infty (\overline \Omega )\), \(\psi \geq 0\). Extensions of this semicontinuity result are obtained in the following cases: two monotone operators, two varying linear operators, varying domains,and non-uniformly bounded operators.
