The author introduces a method for obtaining from a univariate polynomial a multivariate symmetric polynomial. The construction uses divided differences and gives explicit expressions for the multivariate polynomials. The method is applied to the Chebyshev polynomials of first kind obtaining the family of symmetric multivariate Chebyshev polynomials and it is proved that they provide the best uniform approximation of the complete symmetric polynomials.
