Let T be a complete first-order theory in a language L. Consider elementary pairs of models of T, \(M<N\), \(M\neq N\) as \(L^*:=L\cup \{U\}\) structures with M interpreting the new unary predicate symbol U. The paper surveys some recent results on the model theory of these pairs, in particular results which show how some properties of T are expressed by simpler properties of the theory of pairs of models of T.
