The author determines those maximal subgroups of the finite special linear groups, the symplectic groups and the orthogonal groups of odd degree which contain the respective monomial subgroups. He shows that, provided the underlying field is not too small, the monomial subgroups are maximal in the special linear group, but are contained in a pair of maximal subgroups in the other two cases. Some partial information is also obtained for the other finite Chevalley groups.
