Let \(S\) be the unit sphere in \({\mathbb C}^n\), \(k_z\) be the normalized reproducing kernel for the Hardy space \(H^2(S)\), and \(\mathrm{Var}(f;z)=\|(f-\langle fk_z,k_z\rangle)k_z\|^2\) for \(z\) in the open unit ball \({\mathbb B}\) of \({\mathbb C}^n\). For each pair \(j\in{\mathbb N}\) and \(z\in{\mathbb B}\), define \(\rho_j(z)=(1-4^j(1-|z|^2))^{1/2}z/|z|\) if \(4^j(1-|z|^2)<1\) and \(\rho_j(z)=0\) otherwise. With the family \(\rho_j\) one can associate the family of contractive multiplication operators \(M_{m_{\rho_j(z)}}\) by the functions \(m_{\rho_j(z)}(w)=(1-|\rho_j(z)|)/(1-\langle w,\rho_j(z)\rangle)\) for \(z\in{\mathbb B}\) and \(w\in\overline{{\mathbb B}}\). Let \(P\) denote the orthogonal projection from \(L^2\) onto \(H^2(S)\) and \(H_f\) be the Hankel operator with symbol \(f\). The main result of the paper says that, given any \(\delta\in(0,1/2]\), there exists a positive constant \(C\) depending only on \(\delta\) and \(n\) such that \[ \mathrm{Var}^{1/2}(f-Pf;z)\leq C\sum_{j=1}^\infty 2^{(\delta-1)j}\|M_{m_{\rho_j(z)}}H_fk_{\rho_j(z)}\| \] for all \(f\in L^2\) and \(z\in{\mathbb B}\). As an application of this local inequality, the membership of \(H_f\) in the Lorentz-type Schatten ideal \(C_p^+\), \(2n<p<\infty\), is characterized.
