The authors find conditions when a continuous mapping between two metric spaces has an upper gradient in the Lorentz space, providing that its lower local Lipschitz constant belongs to this space. An analogous result is obtained in the case when the target of the mapping is a Banach space with the Radon-Nikodym property. It is obtained also a negative type result, namely, when the differentiability of Lipschitz mapping into a Banach space with the Radon-Nikodym property leads to a bi-Lipschitz non-embedding theorem.
