A numerical method for computing higher order local approximations of invariant manifolds, such as stable, unstable or center manifolds near steady states of a dynamical system is developed. The equations for the higher derivatives of function, which determines the given manifolds at the equilibrium, have the form of multilinear Sylvester equations. It is shown that such equations can be solved under some nonresonance conditions on the spectrum. The final algorithm requires the solution of several linear systems with a bordered Jacobian. A block elimination method developed by \textit{W. Govaerts} and \textit{J. D. Pryce} [IMA J. Numer. Anal. 13, No. 2, 161-180 (1993; Zbl 0778.65017)] is applied to these systems.
