The authors study general forward-backward parabolic equations in one space dimension. The equation described in the paper is similar to the Perona-Malik type equation and to some equations related to oceanography as well as population dynamics phenomena. They use the regularization method initially introduced by \textit{G. I. Barenblatt} et al. [SIAM J. Math Anal. 24, No. 6, 1414--1439 (1993; Zbl 0790.35054)], under a few assumptions on the nonlinear function, and on the added regularization function for which the derivative should vanish when the variable goes to infinity. Another paper which is anounced by the authors deals with the vanishing viscosity method. The authors prove the existence of a unique measure-valued solution in the Radon measures space (the existence in Sobolev spaces seems not to be possible, and depends on the regularity of the initial data). In the last part of the paper, the authors complete their study by giving some important qualitative properties since they can distinguish the continuous and the non-continuous (singular) part of the solution.
