    A classical theorem of S. Bernstein asserts that if f(z) is an entire function of exponential type \(\sigma\) and \(| f(x)| \leq M\) for \(x\in {\mathbb{R}}\), then \(| f'(x)\leq \sigma M\). The author generalizes this theorem as follows: Let f be an entire function such that \[ | f(z)| \leq (A_ 1+A_ 2| z|^ n)\exp [ax^ 2+by^ 2+cx+dy], \] where a,b,c,d\(\in {\mathbb{R}}\) and \(A_ 1,A_ 2\in {\mathbb{R}}_+\) with \(A_ 1+A_ 2>0\), then there exist \(C_ 1,C_ 2\in {\mathbb{R}}\) depending only on n, \(A_ 1\), \(A_ 2\), a, b, c and d such that \[ | f'(z)| \leq (C_ 1+C_ 2| z|^{n+1})\exp (ax^ 2+by^ 2+cx+dy). \]
