The author studies the question of closedness of a verbal subgroup in a linear profinite group. If \(w\) is a group word and \(G\) a group then the verbal subgroup of \(G\) corresponding to \(w\) is the subgroup \(w(G)=\langle w(g)\mid g\in G^k\rangle\) generated algebraically (even if \(G\) is profinite) by all values of \(w\) in \(G\) (here \(k\) is the length of \(w\)). The author proves that every verbal subgroup \(V\) of \(G\) is closed in the following cases: \(\bullet\) \(G\) is virtually a direct product of finitely many \(p\)-adic analytic groups, for various primes \(p\). \(\bullet\) \(G\) is a closed subgroup of \(\prod_p\text{GL}_n(\mathbb Z_p)\) such that every open subgroup of \(G\) has finite Abelianization. In fact in this case \(V\) is even open.
