Many interesting and useful concepts can be characterized in terms of the clopen subsets of a topological space, such as connectedness and zero dimensionality. This notion can also be found studying clopen subtopos, clopen subsets of the Cantor space, clopen sublocales, Stone duality between Boolean algebras and clopen sets of a totally disconnected compact Hausdorff space. In order to get analogous results in the context of a topological category, the author extends the notion of clopen subset in \(\mathcal{TOP}\) (the category of topological spaces and continuous functions) to an arbitrary topological category whose base category is a topos, and he employs clopen subobjects to extend the topological notion of connectedness to normalized topological categories.
