Efficient schemes combining conforming piecewise linear finite elements on triangular and finite volumes on dual volumes associated with the vertices have been studied earlier for fluid mechanics equations [e.g. \textit{C. Debiez, A. Dervieux}, \textit{K. Mer} and \textit{B. Nkonga} Int. J. Numer. Methods Fluids 27, 193--206 (1998; Zbl 0909.76071)]. The motivation of the present paper is to extend the foregoing ideas to degenerate parabolic problems. A robust and efficient numerical scheme for nonlinear degenerate parabolic convection-diffusion-reaction equations in two or three space dimension is presented here.
