Let \(A= \sum_{n=\nu}^\infty c_n q^n\) be a formal Laurent series over the complex numbers, and define the integral part of \(A\) by \([A]= \sum_{\nu\leq n\leq 0} c_nq^n\). The Engel sequence \((a_n)_{n\geq 0}\) associated with \(A\) is given as follows. Set \(a_0= [A]\), \(A_1= A-a_0\) and define recursively \(A_{n+1}= a_nA_n-1\), where \(a_n= [\frac{1}{A_n}]\), \(n\geq 1\). The extended Engel expansion of \(A\) is then, \[ A= a_0+ \sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{1}{a_1\cdots a_n} . \] The authors give another proof of an identity by \textit{K. Garrett, M. Ismail} and \textit{D. Stanton} [Adv. Appl. Math. 23, 274-299 (1999; Zbl 0944.33015)] that generalizes the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. This is achieved by showing that the summation side of the identity is the extended Engel expansion of the other side.
