In this paper, conditions to characterize when a symmetric transfer function matrix admits a symmetric realization are analyzed. A relation between internal and external symmetry for a linear discrete-time control system having simple poles is established. The symmetric stabilization problem is studied using a symmetric feedback gain such that the corresponding output control law stabilizes the closed-loop system. A necessary and sufficient condition to solve this stabilization problem is derived. The results obtained are illustrated by a third-order numerical example.
