In this paper the author uses piecewise weighted mean functions to approximate histograms. It is shown that the piecewise weighted mean functions can be used for smoothing histograms by preserving monotonicity and positivity of the data function. Although the proposed approximant satisfies only the global area matching condition it is computationally advantageous.
