This paper deals with homogeneous extensions of (metrizable) topological spaces. Let us say that a topological space \(X\) is \textit{weight-homogeneous} if all nonempty open subspaces have the same weight, and \textit{\(h\)-homogeneous} if every nonempty clopen subset of \(X\) is homeomorphic to \(X\) and \(Ind X=0\); a space \(Y\) is \textit{\(u\)-homogeneous with respect to a space} \(X\) if every nonempty open subset of \(Y\) contains a closed (in \(Y\)) subset that is homeomorphic to \(X\); \(X\) is said to be \textit{\(u\)-homogeneous} if \(X\) is \(u\)-homogeneous with respect to itself and \(Ind X=0\); for a space \(X\), define the family \(LF(X)=\{Y : \) each point of \(y\in Y\) lies in some clopen neighborhood that is homeomorphic to a closed subset of \(X\}\), a space \(Y\in \sigma LF(X)\) if \(Y=\cup \{Y_i : i\in \omega\}\), where each \(Y_i\in LF(X)\) and each \(Y_i\) is a closed subspace of \(Y\). \textit{A. V. Ostrovskij} [Math. USSR, Sb. 59, No. 2, 317--337 (1988); translation from Mat. Sb., Nov. Ser. 131(173), No. 3(11), 323--346 (1986; Zbl 0629.54025)] and \textit{F. van Engelen} [Topol. Proc. 17, 303--315 (1992; Zbl 0793.54007)] obtained (independently) that every \(u\)-homogeneous space of first category is \(h\)-homogeneous. Here, the author modifies their technique to investigate closed subsets of metric spaces of first category. Amongst others, the following results are proved: (1) Suppose that \(Ind X=0\), every nonempty open subset of \(Y\) has weight \(\geq k\) and contains a copy of \(X\), and \(Y\) is of first category, then \(Y\) contains a nowhere dense closed copy of the \(h\)-homogeneous extension of weight \(k\) of \(X\) with respect to spaces of first category; (2) suppose that \(Ind X= 0\), every nonempty open subset of \(Y\) has weight \(k\) and contains a closed copy of \(X\), \(Y\) is of first category and \(Y\in \sigma LF(X)\), then \(Y\) is homeomorphic to the \(h\)-homogeneous extension of weight \(k\) of \(X\) with respect to spaces of first category. The following question is proposed: Is there a (metrizable) separable zero-dimensional homogeneous space of first category which is not \(h\)-homogenous?
