The authors study a finite element approximation for a free boundary plasma problem. Using a mixed approach, the authors formulate a weak formulation and study the existence and uniqueness of a solution to the continuous model problem. The authors derive optimal order energy norm a priori error estimates proving the convergence of the method. Further, the authors derive a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator for the adaptive mesh refinement algorithm. The given theoretical results are illustrated by some numerical examples.
