The authors propose and analyze the numerical method for the linear wave equation with two state variables. The proposed method uses the virtual element method for the spatial discretization in combination with the \(C^0P_2\) time-stepping scheme, i.e., a scheme that leads to a piecewise-quadratic solution with respect to time, which is continuous at time nodes. Using the energy method, the authors derive the optimal error estimates in the \(L^2\)-norm and the \(H^1\)-seminorm. The results of the numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the efficiency and applicability of the method.
