The author consider a local discontinuous Galerkin method applied to an elliptic problem with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The discontinuous discretization is applied to the usual mixed variational formulation that uses fluxes beside the original functions and rather general finite elements are included by using just its local approximation properties. A local a posteriori error estimate is derived, analyzed and applied for adaptive grid generation. Finally, some simple one-dimensional numerical examples are given.
