    For two Banach spaces \(E\) and \(F,\) write \(B(E, F),\) \(B ^{+}(E, F),\) \( \Phi (E, F),\) \(S\Phi (E, F)\) and \(R(E, F),\) respectively, for the spaces of the bounded linear, double splitting, Fredholm, semi-Fredholm and finite rank operators from \(E\) into \(F.\) Let, moreover, \(\Sigma \) be any of the following sets: \[ \begin{aligned}\{T &\in \Phi (E, F): \text{Index }T= \text{const and }\dim N(T) = \text{const}\},\\ \{T &\in S\Phi (E, F): \text{either }\dim N(T)= \text{const}< \infty \text{ or codim\,}R(T)= \text{const}< \infty\} \text{or} \{T&\in R(E, F): \text{Rank\,}T =\text{const}< \infty\}. \end{aligned} \] It is well-known that \(\Sigma\) is a smooth submanifold of \(B(E, F)\) with the tangent space \(T_{A}\Sigma = \{B \in B(E, F): BN(A) \subset R(A)\}\) for any \(A \in \Sigma \). The authors prove that \(B^*(E, F) = \{T \in B^{+}(E, F): \dim N(T) = \text{codim}\,R(T) = \infty\}\) is a smooth submanifold of \(B(E,F)\) with the tangent space \(T_A B^*(E,F)= \{T\in B(E,F): TN(A)\subset R(A)\}\) for each \(A\in B^*(E, F)\). Some examples in the particular case \(E= F= \mathbb R^n\) are given as well.
